Knights raise funds to help local causes

The Eighth Annual Knights of Columbus Mixed Game tournament raised in excess of $9,700 in charitable contributions which in turn will be distributed to worthy causes, to be determined by the organization.

This would not be possible without the support of our local (and not so local) bowlers who participated in the tournament and made it what it has become today, to say the least, quite successful.

Carl Christman is this events band leader and he does a great job in getting sponsors, organizing and finalizing it along with the help from his Knights of Columbus crew.

Not only was this is super event for our community, there were some pretty lucky folks walking away with some pretty awesome door prizes, not to mention place money for the top eight doubles teams.

Taking first place was the team of Derek Bennett and Robert Hempel with a score of 2137 over the course of the 6 different scoring format styles.

Second place went to DJ Pyfer and Tony Faustner for a 2117 and Shawn Thomas with Craig Foster took third place with a 2094 total.

Bowlers were allowed to participate in any or all squads but could only cash once with the same part-ner, as you will see from the remaining list of winners.

Fourth place went to Shelly Burk with Derek Bennett, 2020 and Bennett teamed up with Thomas to take a fifth place win for a 2014.

Sam Turner and Armour Brown finished in sixth with 2004, Bill Kaplan and Jim Bomboy took seventh with 1998 and the team of Desiree Douglas and Stedman Benitez took the final paying spot with a 1987.

Highlights from the event featured no-tap 300 games rolled by Robert Hempel, Kyle Morris, Jimmy Bomboy, Bill Kaplan, Sam Bowman, Ryan Thomas, Noel Gordon, Dan Bailey and Tony Mendoza.

Shawn Thomas had a no-tap 298 as did Craig Foster and Tony Mendoza posted a no-tap 297, and no tap 290 games were rolled by Derek Bennett and Tony Faustner.

The team of Douglas and Benitez had the high Scotch Doubles games of 275 and the highest Best Ball game of 298.

Christman offered a word of thanks to all who helped out, participated and donated to help make the event once again a huge success and a “See you next Labor Day” as a promise to return.

League Highs

Jason Olnes led bowlers in league play with a 742 from the Tuesday Night Mixed League at Twin Oaks.

Olnes had games of 259, 244 and 239 to make up the super series.

Leading Suburbanites on week two was Michael Gillian with a second highest set in the association of 722 that went 257, 211 and 254 and rounding out the top three while celebrating his birthday week was Richard Jacoby.

Jacoby was the high scoring senior bowler last week with a 719 from the Entertainers league where he started the day with games of 264 and 279 before a setback in game three that kept his total to a minimum.

Ironically, Jacoby had the same type of series a few days prior while bowling in the TNT league where he started off with a low score before shooting 264 and 259, ending up with a 712 for totals.

Other bowlers in the sevens were Johnny Scheid with 709 on games of 210, 245 and 254 from the Suburban and Marshall Miller rolled 257, 233 and 215 for a 705 in the Entertainers.

Honorable mention goes to Billy Smith Jr. of the Early Birds for his first adult league certified 200 game of 231.

No-Tap News

Charles Norman nabbed the first place crown in last week’s senior no-tap Colorama at Thunderbird Lanes, putting an 896 on the board for the win.

Sam Bowman rolled one of four no-tap 300 games recorded last Friday to assist in a second place win for an 867 and Rick Olson, with a no-tap 300 for game two, finished up in third with an 859.

Dan Bailey and Dave Yett were on the at-a-boy list for the other two no-tap 300’s.

Cathy Shuman won the ladies division for a 760, followed by Diane Frame who posted a 731.

Scratch singles winners were Sam Bowman, 810, Rick Olson, 802 and Charles Norman, 755.

The Mystery Doubles was almost a sweep with partners Sam Bowman and Scott Brenke teaming up to win games one and two but Kathy Zerbe and Charles Norman swooped in and pulled game three out to stop their bid.

Strike pot winners were Mike Peckinpaugh, Charles Norman, Rick Olson and Cathy Shuman and chal-lenge shot winners included Robert Lansberry and Jeff Janssen.

Lansberry was drawn for the ‘Match Play’ shot and had no problem with rolling three 9-counts in a row for the win.

Janssen’s challenge was the ‘Pill Draw’ where he tossed the #5 pill on the table as his designated goal to knock down just 5 pins.

Janssen put his skill and years of lane play into action and easily put five pins in the pit and left five pins on the deck for the win.

This event is held every Friday afternoon starting at 1pm at Thunderbird Lanes and is open to all bow-lers age 50 and above.

Entry fee is just $15 per person and includes Mystery Doubles and Special Challenge tickets. Strike pot tickets and the scratch singles event are optional.
