MEDICINE PARK — This weekend’s return of the 18th Annual Mayor’s Blues Ball marks the end of the summer music festival season in the cobblestone community of the Wichita Mountains.
You’ll have to be blue to not have a ball in Medicine Park on Labor Day weekend.
Rooted in the traditional sounds and stylings of America’s music, you’ll hear variations creating an electric array of sounds, be it from acoustic artists or plugged into amps filled with energy.
That’s the allure that brings folks from far and wide to Hitchin’ Post Park. Bucking traditions from the past several years, Friday night’s opening performances by Sweet Brenda & Sour Mash and Rachel Ammons weren’t a wet affair as rain forecasts, much like the majority of this summer, came up high and dry.
Saturday offered performances with a chance of rain but by afternoon, those chances were slim.
The family-friendly festival is free to attend and worth the trip. Under the park’s canopy and with breezes coming from Medicine Creek, the setting is as cool as the performances. Just bring a chair. There’s food, beverage and other great vendors there with something for everyone.
Sunday’s lineup: Amanda Howle & The Big Bad Wolves, 3 p.m.; Chebon Tiger Band, 5 p.m.; Chant Duplantier, 7 p.m.; Sweet & Dirty All Star Blues Review, 9 p.m.
