The Salvation Army of Lawton is asking for donations to replace their A/C unit for the Cooling Shelter.
The Cooling Shelter serve as a vital resource for the community, offering a cool and safe space for individuals and families during extreme heat, according to a press release. The shelter also provides access to water, food and other essential services.
The Shelter opens any time the temperature is 100 degrees or higher, the release said. Since the temperature has been extremely high for weeks, many A/C units in the community, including the Salvation Army, have been working overtime.
The Cooling Shelter is separate from the homeless shelter which was recently shut down due to storm damage. It is a daytime shelter and is usually closed from 6-7 p.m.
The Salvation Army is asking for $18,336 to replace the unit, the release said. Any donation can make a difference.
Donations can be made directly to the Salvation Army Cooling Shelter in Lawton. Anyone can mail it in or drop it off at 1306 SW E Ave.
