Stan Booker grew up in Lawton and attended Eisenhower High School and Cameron University. He was married to his high school sweetheart for nearly 49 years before her passing in 2024, and is a proud father and grandfather.
Serving as the mayor of Lawton since January 2019, Booker spearheaded the PROPEL 2019 initiative, transforming the city’s infrastructure with significant investments in water and sewer lines, achieving unprecedented progress. He also revolutionized the street program by adopting the ODOT road improvement model, leading to extensive road repairs and improvements. Under his leadership, more than 40 roads received major repairs in just one year.
1. What role should city government play in economic development in Lawton? Why?
The City of Lawton should play a proactive role in economic development, as all municipalities must invest in themselves to access state funds. The payroll from new industries boosts the local economy, developing even more jobs that keep our economy growing. Not so long ago, our population was declining, which resulted in home prices declining, undermining individual wealth. Job creation efforts ensure a growing population to undergird our economy. Increasing population and economy build the tax base for schools and quality of life amenities.
Economic development is integral to everything we do. We must invest in infrastructure — roads, water and sewer systems — and quality-of-life amenities like parks, arts, education and youth programs. Supporting small businesses and fostering innovation are also crucial.
Our strategic plan, PROPEL 2040, guides Lawton-Fort Sill with a comprehensive approach to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity. Engaging residents through forums and surveys ensures initiatives reflect community needs.
2. What is the biggest challenge(s) facing Lawton? What are your solutions?
Lawton’s biggest challenge has been a lack of self-investment. Despite leaders’ efforts, substantial support was hard to muster. PROPEL 2019 began reversing this trend, initiating unprecedented community investment.
To address failing street infrastructure, PROPEL 2040 is crucial, prioritizing street repairs and maintenance for safe, efficient transportation. Additionally, great parks are essential for a thriving community. PROPEL 2040 invests in quality-of-life enhancements, ensuring sustainable, attractive spaces for young families.
Job creation remains a critical challenge. PROPEL 2040 focuses on economic development initiatives to attract and retain businesses, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. Public safety is also prioritized, with investments ensuring a secure environment for all residents. By fully implementing PROPEL 2040, Lawton can transform into a community of choice where families thrive, meeting challenges head-on and paving the way for a prosperous future.
