DUNCAN — The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center will host a dedication at 1 p.m. Saturday for a new bronze sculpture created by Oklahoma sculptor LaQuincey Reed during its National Day of the Cowboy celebration.
Reed’s bronze sculpture, “Get Up and Go,” depicts three Black cowboys and was originally on display at the center in its clay form during his featured artist exhibit January-February 2023, according to a press release. The sculpture is now in its final form, bronze, and home at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.
Reed is an elected member of the National Sculpture Society in Oklahoma City, commissioned by several organizations to create masterpieces, the release said. He has commissioned works in the State Capitol, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, the Cleveland County courthouse and now Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.
“We’ve known LaQuincey for several years now,” Leah Mulkey, Chisholm Trail Heritage Center executive director, said. “When we started working on adding more materials representing the diverse individuals who made the Chisholm Trail so successful, we knew LaQuincey would be an amazing artist to help us utilize art to tell the story of Black cowboys.”
The dedication on National Day of the Cowboy is meant to honer Reed’s skills, artwork and the history of Black cowboys, the release said. Entry to National Day of the Cowboy and the dedication is free and open to the public.
