The City of Lawton is preparing to move into its final round of community-wide mill and overlay upgrades.
The action comes after the City Council voted Tuesday to award the third mill and overlay project to T&G Construction, the Lawton firm that is nearing completion on Phase 2 work. The firm bid $3.924 million for this new round of projects, which is expected to begin in several weeks.
Council members had indicated earlier this year that T&G Construction was the low and best bidder on the final 30 road projects, but opted to award one set of 15 roads in the fiscal year that ended June 30 and the final set in the fiscal year that began July 1. Funding for this most recent set of 15 roads comes from the city’s 2024-2025 operating budget, which features a larger allocation of road improvement money so more work can be done.
The projects are part of Mayor Stan Booker’s “Ten Wins’ initiative and was crafted to allow the less-expensive mill and overlay technique to be used to upgrade residential and collector streets, and some arterials. The process — grinding off the top layer of asphalt, then applying a fresh layer after making any necessary and minor repairs — is significantly less expensive than rebuilding a street, while giving the road another five to eight years of life, said Ward 4 Councilman George Gill.
Streets in the new program are: Northeast Rogers Lane, Northwest Keystone Drive, Southwest 76th Street, Southwest Forest Avenue, Southwest Cherokee Avenue, Northwest Hunter Road, Northwest Horton Boulevard, Northwest 14th Street, Northwest 29th Street, Northwest Erwin Lane, Northwest Smith Avenue, Northwest 16th Street, Northwest 12th Street, Northwest 20th Street, and the eastbound lanes of Quanah Parker Trailway. The project also includes portions of Northwest Ferris Avenue and Northwest Lincoln Avenue. Work is to include mill and overlay, and some structural patching.
