No group will be as happy with the forecasted lower temperatures this week than the Grand National Horseman Association members who will gather at the Comanche County Fairgrounds for their annual Playday Finals.
Members of the group will be arriving in Lawton today and be preparing for Tuesday’s start of the actual competition and while they’ve worked through 100-degree weather many times, this week’s 80s and 90s will be a welcome change.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 8 a.m. Tuesday followed by the first game as they are called by the group, the Flagpole pattern.
Wednesday the contestants will compete in the Flags and Potato; Thursday they will conduct the Pylon and Spur; Friday the games are Barrels and Poles and Saturday the Bowtie.
The only actual rodeo event is the barrel racing while the others are a set pattern that each contestant must run their horse through with the goal of posting the fastest time.
The contestants are broken into different age groups starting with young kids who are learning the basics of competing with the focus on teaching horsemanship and how to care for their mount.
The week will be capped by a banquet and dance on Saturday night where the trophies and saddles will be presented to those who claim the prized all-around titles.
There is no admission and fans are invited to come and watch the action in the Expo Building at the Comanche County Fairgrounds.
