Southwest Oklahoma is known for hot temperatures around the Fourth of July but surprisingly the Lawton Country Club has also witnessed rains during the Annual Firecracker Open and once again there may be some raindrops falling on the heads of competitors today when the 55th Annual event begins a three-day run.
Rain fell during the final days of spring but the recent streak of 100-degree days has started to dry out the rough and make for some fast greens. Despite the hot weather, 48 two-person teams will tee off starting at 7:30 a.m. as the lower flights begin their two days of competition. The teams will be flighted after the first round and will end their chase for the title on Saturday.
The Championship Flight will feature 24 golfers who will begin hitting the course Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the first of three rounds of golf to determine the winner who will take home a $1,000 cash bonus.
Included in the field are the two most recent champions, Peter Kim who shot 205 to claim the 2022 title and Cullen Stahl who fired a 207 to win the crown in 2021. There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID and last year the event was canceled due to problems with six greens at the LCC layout.
Stahl will tee off at 1:40 p.m. with Brady Porter and Kevin Farmer. Kim is set to start at 2 p.m. and will be paired with Niels Sorenson and Tyler Kaman.
