Tamara Keitt, the Lawton mother who entered the worldwide Super Mom Competition, is no longer in the running, but she is far from sad.
After qualifying in the quarterfinals, she placed fourth and lost in the competition, which is sponsored by the Children’s Miracle Network.
“I didn’t realize that what gets you in first (place) is money,” Keitt said. “I had family and friends that were spending from $400 to $900 a day keeping me in first. I didn’t know that. I’m thinking, ‘It’s a contest. You win by votes, not buying votes.’ I was under a lot of stress because even though I know that people were buying votes for me, it was really troubling that they were spending their money like that daily.”
Keitt said she’s thankful she’s not in the competition anymore.
“It would be even more money to keep me in first,” Keitt said.
Keitt said that with all the money spent in the competition, they could’ve put a down payment on a much-needed van.
“I know over $2,000 was spent, if not three or four,” Keitt said. ‘My aunt said, ‘You did what you thought was right. We all can learn from past experiences so that we don’t make them again. That money could have been used for a down payment on a van. I think it’s completely wrong. How they got these women that really need help to line their pockets.’”
Keitt said she’s still looking for a van to transport her tetraplegic daughter.
“I’ve been checking to see if there’s agencies that have grants to help single moms like me to get a wheelchair-accessible van for their child,” Keitt said. “The only time she leaves the house is to go to the emergency room, a doctor’s appointment or therapy. That’s boring, she’s 21, it’s summertime. She’s in the house every day, day in and day out. I just think it’s sad that they don’t have any agencies to help you.”
Even though she is no longer in the competition, it wasn’t a total loss.
“I reconnected with high school friends and family members because they wanted to help, they wanted to see us win,” Keitt said.
