Gov. Kevin Stitt has called a special election to fill the Comanche County District 1 Commissioner post recently held by John O’Brien.
O’Brien, who had been in the role since January 2023, was suspended from office May 7 following a State Attorney General’s multi-county grand jury recommended he be removed due to allegations of abuse of office.
Criminal charges were filed against O’Brien in Comanche County District Court on March 13 for two felony counts of embezzlement by a county official and misdemeanor charges of computer crime and two counts of outraging public decency. The felony charges were downgraded to misdemeanor counts and the original misdemeanor charges were dismissed with his plea agreement.
O’Brien resigned Tuesday and received two 18-month deferred sentences plus fines, court cost and restitution. He is ineligible to run for elected public office for 18 months.
On Wednesday, Stitt issued a proclamation that the special primary election will be Tuesday, Aug. 27 and the special general election held Tuesday, Nov. 5. If a primary election is not necessary, the special general election will be held Aug. 27.
The candidate filing period will be held June 17-19. Filing will be conducted at the Comanche County Election Board, 315 SW 5th.
Lawton realtor Trent Logan was sworn in as interim commissioner on Monday.
