Marlow woman, friend federally charged for Jan. 6, 2021, attack on U.S. Capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY — A Marlow grandmother and her friend from Texas made initial appearances Friday in federal court for their alleged roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, United States Capitol attack.

A criminal complaint was filed May 15 in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia charging Leslie Kathryn Bogue, 66, of Marlow, and Trina Reyes, 67, of San Antonio, Texas, with entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds, and parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol grounds of buildings, according to the criminal complaint. An arrest warrant was then issued.

Bogue, a mother and grandmother, has been the coach/fitness instructor at GymJam Fitness & Gymnastics Center in Marlow. Reyes is a realtor and former mayor of Von Ormy, Texas, a San Antonio suburb.

Bogue and Reyes made an appearance via Zoom with the Court of the District of Columbia and are each free on $5,000 bond. Both women had to turn over their passports and their travel is restricted to their U.S. District Court regions as part of their release.

The allegations stem from what happened during the joint session of the U.S. Congress where the House of Representatives and the Senate were meeting in separate chambers to certify the vote count of the Electoral College of the 2020 Presidential Election, according to the statement of facts.

Outside the Capitol Building, altercations between the crowd and Capitol Police escalated and around 2 p.m. entry was forced through breaking windows and doors as well as assaulting police officers, the facts state. Others in the crowd encouraged and assisted, according to Special Agent David L. Harrell.

Closed circuit video cameras throughout the Capitol Building offered further insight into what happened that day, Harrell stated.

During the investigation, Bogue and Reyes were identified as two of the people inside the Capitol and the restricted area, the facts state. Reyes was clad in a long black puffer-style jacket with a fur-lined hood, red scarf and brown boots; Bogue was wearing a blue “Trump 2020” baseball cap, tan jacket with white lining, blue jeans and sneakers. They were seen on video entering the Capitol through the East Rotunda doors at 2:40 p.m., less than two minutes after other rioters forced the doors open from the inside.

According to the statement of facts, once inside, Reyes and Bogue moved on to the Rotunda and remained there with dozens of other rioters until 2:56 p.m., leaving the building two minutes later.

Reyes spoke with FBI agents on Jan. 29, 2022. She said she and Bogue had met in Dallas on Jan. 4, 2021, and drove to Washington, D.C., where they attended a rally where President Donald Trump spoke. Following his speech, she said they walked toward the Capitol Building and said police officers were removing and moving the barricades to let people pass. However, she also said as they continued up the Capitol steps she saw tear gas being fired and that she was exposed to some of the gas.

Reyes claimed an officer opened the door to the Capitol to allow people to enter the building. Once inside, she said they took photos. She told the agents she saw others being disrespectful to the Capitol by placing “MAGA” hats on top of statues and vandalizing paintings. She said they decided to leave and immediately walked back out of the Capitol, according to the statement of facts.

Video showed officers were trying to restrict people from breaching the barricades and Reyes was seen on the front line of protesters minutes before Capitol Police were pushed back by the rioters, Harrell stated. Video also showed officers resisting allowing protestors inside the Capitol and Reyes and Bogue were seen entering as officers were shoved and grabbed and an officer was pulled to the floor away from the doors, “a few feet away” from the Reyes and Bogue.

Bogue spoke with agents on July 12, 2022, and admitted to traveling with Reyes to Washington, D.C., and to being at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Although she identified Reyes in a photograph from inside the Capitol, she said she hadn’t gone inside the Capitol. During a follow up interview in February, she admitted she’d entered the Capitol Building with Reyes.

Bogue and Reyes are ordered to attend a hearing via Zoom at 11:30 a.m. May 28 at their representative U.S. District Court, records indicate.
