DUNCAN — A May 9 wreck with a City of Duncan vehicle led to the arrest of two men for drug charges.

Devante Jamaal Harris, 32, of Duncan, made his initial appearance Monday in Stephens County District Court where he received felony charges of driving under the influence of drugs and bringing contraband into jail, and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia, records indicate.

Harris was joined by Dereck Demotray Williams, 32, of Oklahoma City, in court Monday where he received a felony charge of trafficking in fentanyl and a misdemeanor count of public intoxication.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Duncan Police responded around 3 p.m. May 9 to an injury wreck on Oklahoma 7 and Halliburton Drive. A black Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Harris had collided with a City of Duncan vehicle before going into a ditch, the probable cause affidavit states.

Trooper Kyle Keithley stated he contacted Harris who appeared “confused about the events.” He was slurring his speech and seemed sleepy, the affidavit states. He told the trooper his gloves had fallen onto the floor and he’d been looking down to get them when the wreck happened. Harris tried to call for a ride to leave the scene, according to Keithley.

When trying to tow the Tahoe, Keithley stated it was locked. A confused Harris said he must’ve locked his keys inside, according to the affidavit. The trooper placed Harris under arrest and during a search of his pockets, found his keys, along with a metal straw with a burnt substance on both ends and burnt foil, Keithley stated.

Harris was first taken to Duncan Regional Hospital for a blood draw. When he was booked into the Stephens County jail and changing into jail clothing, a large number of hydrocodone pills were discovered hidden under his genitals, the affidavit states.

Harris’ passenger, Williams, was sweating profusely and his pupils were dilated, according to Duncan Police Officer Kirsten Thomas. He was found with a full container of medical marijuana but didn’t have a patient’s card and was placed under arrest. He was taken to Duncan Regional Hospital and medically cleared to be booked into jail.

Jailers discovered several fentanyl pills in Williams’ clothing while he was changing into his jail clothing, the affidavit states.

Harris has a January 2016 felony conviction in Comanche County for second-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, records indicate.

Harris is being held on $250,000 bond. Williams’ bond is $75,000.
