Potential jurors will be arriving Monday at the Comanche County Courthouse for selection in the fourth and final week of the current felony jury trial docket.
A pair of higher profile cases will top the trials on tap.
All cases have the potential for a plea or continuation.
On Monday, Comanche County Presiding District Judge Emmit Tayloe’s courtroom will begin adjudication for a Lawton man facing allegations including gun charges stemming from a series of incidents involving a woman who claimed he’d been pimping her out.
Domonique Eugene Cooper, 31, will be tried for felony charges of first-degree burglary, feloniously pointing a firearm, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a firearm after former felony convictions, as well as a misdemeanor count of domestic abuse-assault and battery, records indicate. Due to four prior felony convictions, the rape count is punishable by no less than 20 years and the burglary count by 80 years.
A felony count of first-degree rape initially filed against Cooper has since been dismissed.
Lawton police began investigating Cooper following a June 18, 2021, welfare check of a woman who had been strangled during a domestic incident the night before, according to the probable cause affidavit. She said Cooper had made several phone calls about her and demanded people go over to the hotel where she was and “make her ‘work.’”
The woman explained she’d met Cooper through one of her online ads for sex work and they began a casual relationship that intensified when he learned how much money she made. She said he began increasing her prices for the clients and on more than one occasion would log onto her page and demand a down payment for services, the affidavit states. She said he would take the money for himself.
She said he began setting up appointments for her in the middle of the night and would make her go, even when she didn’t want to and claimed he set up five appointments for her on one day and forced her to perform, the affidavit states. She claimed she’d seen him become violent and feared him.
The told police, Cooper asked her if she wanted to be hit for not bringing in enough money. According to the affidavit, he began beating her, then dropped his underwear to his ankles and made her perform a sex act to him. She said he then raped her. When he went in the bathroom, she said she ran for help and he fled, taking a gun with him.
Police reported she had a cut to her ear, bruising to her arms, leg and back and her voice was raspy. She said she had pain to her neck and head, the affidavit states.
A single gunshot resonated and led police to the door to 1510½ NW Baldwin where it was kicked in and there was a fresh shell casing found in the entry, according to the affidavit. Cooper was found with his arm around another man and was pointing a gun at him. He then jumped out the back window and police said he fought with them all the way to a police car where he was handcuffed and put inside.
Police reported recovering a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol, a bag containing three ecstasy pills, a bag with multiple Xanax bars, and a vile containing THC from his bag, the affidavit states. It was learned he also had three active arrest warrants.
Cooper’s four prior felony convictions are from Comanche County: February 2013, knowingly concealing/withholding stolen property, larceny; September 2015, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and endangering others while attempting to elude police; and March 2019, escape from a penitentiary, records indicate.
Cooper has been held on $150,000 bond since his initial court appearance on June 22, 2021.
Voir dire will begin for jurors Tuesday in District Judge Scott D. Meaders’ court for one of two brothers accused of fentanyl trafficking.
Brandon Woods, 20, of Lawton, is facing trial for aggravated fentanyl trafficking and obstructing police, records indicate.
Woods was arrested, along with his brother Cameron Woods in May 2023 following a Lawton Police Special Operations Division operation that netted four arrests in total.
Detectives arranged a purchase of 200 fentanyl pills from Cameron Woods from a home at 4001 NW Ozmun. He was seen getting into a black Dodge Charger and, according to the probable cause affidavit, police knew he had a suspended license.
Cameron Woods left and drove to Cache Road Square, Northwest 38th Street and Cache Road, and police tried to make a traffic stop. Instead, according to the affidavit, he took off at a high rate of speed through the parking lot before turning back west to go behind Harbor Freight. He and a passenger then got out and took off on foot while the car was still in drive. Cameron Woods was seen throwing a bag while running and he was taken into custody near the Boot Barn. The passenger, his brother Brandon, was taken into custody at the La Quinta Inn parking lot.
The bag was recovered with 200 fentanyl pills and $2,058 recovered from Cameron Woods, the affidavit states. A search warrant of the home was executed.
Police recovered another 298 pills at the home, $15,461 in cash and a stolen handgun, according to the affidavit.
Brandon Woods has been held on $75,000 bond since his initial court appearance on May 12, 2023.
Cameron Woods, 21, pleaded guilty on Feb. 6 to counts of aggravated fentanyl trafficking, endangering others while eluding/attempting to elude police, maintaining a place for keeping/selling a controlled substance, acquiring proceeds from drug activity, knowingly receiving, concealing and/or withholding stolen property, obstructing police and driving without a valid license, records indicate.
