SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Cameron’s baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 3-1 victory over St. Mary’s Saturday in San Antonio.
Cameron claimed a 13-6 victory in Friday’s opener and the two teams wind up the series today at 1 p.m. The third game of the series was still being played at press time.
The deciding seventh started harmlessly as the first two Aggies went down on a strikeout and a ground ball.
But Lance Barnett was hit by a pitch and Gabe Clyden hit a single through the right side of the diamond to put runners on the corners and force the Rattlers to change pitchers.
But the new pitcher threw a wild pitch that brought the first run home. After a walk to W. Grant, CU’s Spencer Simpson singled to left-center to bring home the second run.
With the lead CU Coach Kyle Williams brought in Josh Martinez to the mound to save the game. He allowed a leadoff single but came back with a strikeout and a pair fly ball outs to seal the win. Grayden Stauffer got the mound win for CU after pitching a clean sixth with a strikeout.
Hunter Smith collected a pair of hits for the Aggies to lead the offense.
The Aggies scored in six of nine innings during Friday’s victory with them putting three on the board in both the seventh and eighth to seal the outcome.
Barnett led the offense with three hits, one a home run and one being a double. He dove in three runs. Simpson had a pair of hits, one of those being a two-run homer, and drove in four runs. Wyatt Grant and Drew Durst both hit home runs in addition two two hits for Grant and three hits for Durst.
The Aggies ended with 14 hits and they were aided by seven walks by the St. Mary’s pitching staff.
Elijah Tolsma was the beneficiary of all the offensive support, as he threw seven strong innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs. He walked just one and fanned two.
