SHAWNEE—Cameron’s softball team got the bats going in the second game of a doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday to down the Bison, 5-0, to earn the split at the OBU Softball Field.
The Bison held the Aggies’ offense down in the first game for a 4-1 victory but the win in the second game pushed the CU record to 19-12 heading into another tough Lone Star Conference series at Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas, starting with a noon doubleheader on Thursday. The Aggies take a 16-11 LSC record to Laredo and are sitting in the middle of the conference standings which are led by West Texas with a 22-2 LSC mark.
After losing the first game Tuesday, the Aggies wasted little time getting the offense going in the second game of the twinbill, scoring three runs in the first and then leaving the rest to the pitching of Stormee Reed.
The first-inning rally started with a walk to Taylor Rowley and an Alyssa Deanda single. That brought up the dangerous Kaiden Boren who cracked a three-run homer to give her team all the offense it would need.
For good measure the Aggies added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth after a Rylee Ross single got things going and eventually CU got a run on an OBU error and Kelsye Loughman doubled home the fifth run of the game.
Reed, who is a native of Shawnee, had plenty of friends and family in the stands and she gave them a thrill, working all seven innings, allowing three hits in getting the shutout to run her record to 7-6. She fanned five and didn’t walk a batter while forcing seven ground-ball outs and seven fly-ball outs.
The Aggies did grab an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game after a Rylee Ross double drove home Tinley Schmidgal who had reached on a single.
But the Bison bounced back to score three in the bottom of the second and pitcher Max Morgan slammed the door on the Aggies over the final three innings, allowing no hits. She did walk four but fanned seven CU batters to get the save.
Jocelyn Bright was tagged with the pitching loss for CU, working all six innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs. She walked two and fanned four while falling to 8-3 on the season.
