OKLAHOMA CITY — Lawton Police Chief James T. Smith was recognized with the highest honor bestowed to Oklahoma law officers last weekend.
In winning the William Matthew “Bill” Tilghman Public Service Award from the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Hall of Fame, Smith is the first police officer from Lawton or Comanche County to receive the honor.
At Saturday’s Hall of Fame reception at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City, Smith’s career in law enforcement was highlighted and recognized.
“In receiving this honor, I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful,” he said. “This recognition is not just for me but a testament to the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of every member, sworn and non-sworn, of the Lawton Police Department.”
Smith said it reflects the trust and support received from the citizens of the community as well as the City of Lawton.
“Together, we stand united in our dedication to serve and protect,” he said.
In a certificate of recognition presented to Smith on Feb. 13, Mayor Stan Booker said Smith’s recognition “is a testament to his outstanding service and unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of compassion and fairness, reflecting the values cherished by the citizens” of the state and of Lawton.
Smith, who became Lawton Police Chief in September 2012, brought 30 years of comprehensive law enforcement experience that began in 1982. He served three years with the Kentucky State Police and 27 years with the Jefferson County Police, which merged into the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Smith also has military experience which has encompassed 30 years of commissioned service that included 10 years in the Kentucky Army National Guard and the remainder with the United States Army Reserves; where he retired at the rank of Colonel in June of 2011.
Smith’s education includes Bachelor of Science in Police Administration with a minor in Military Science. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, Southern Police Institute and Senior Management Institute for Police. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Action badge.
Richard DeLaughter, president of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Museum and Hall of Fame said the award is a testament to Smith’s dedication and professionalism as well as to his effort to provide the highest levels of service to citizens.
