OKLAHOMA CITY — Tulsa McLain got a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining to finally subdue pesky Anadarko, 62-56, Thursday in a Class 4A boys quarterfinal game at the State Fairgrounds Arena.
The Warriors were down by 10 at halftime but Coach Doug Schumpert made a few adjustments during the break and his Warriors exploded for a 22-6 scoring edge in the third quarter as they surged out to a 39-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.
But McLain finally started to use its size edge and slowly pulled away to a 52-43 lead and the Warriors seemed to be in trouble but somehow they made several big plays including a couple of big long-range shots and with 15 seconds remaining Anadarko was down by just two, 58-56, with hope for a big rally still possible.
The Warriors were unable to get a quick steal and had to foul to stop the clock. McLain was able to make both free throws and that erased all doubt.
Anadarko came in as the underdog after reaching the State Tournament through the consolation bracket but Schumpert’s club gave Tulsa McLain all it wanted and more before the Warriors ran out of time.
Earlier Weatherford rolled to an easy victory, 54-34, over Stilwell as the Eagles seem on course to meet Douglass in the title game Saturday. Douglass was facing Blanchard in a later game.
